Organisations can categorise patient notes using Note Categories, making it easier to identify and filter different types of notes within a patient record. Categories help keep clinical. communication, financial and any custom information clearly separated while still remaining within the notes section. These categories are used in the Patient notes section of the patient profile.
In this article we'll cover how to:
- enable or disable default note categories.
- create a custom note category.
- edit or delete a custom note category.
Only users with the correct permissions can add a note category. If you think you should have permission to perform such an action please contact the organisation owner.Add a note snippet
- Navigate to Organisation settings.
- Locate and click the Form/Input Settings section of the settings.
- Click the Edit icon
next to Note Categories.

You will see several default categories:
- General - always enabled and cannot be disabled.
- Clinical - can be enabled or disabled.
- Communication - can be enabled or disabled.
- Administration - can be enabled or disabled.
- Financial - can be enabled or disabled.
Enable or disable the optional categories as required.

Create a custom note category
- Click Add custom category.

- Enter a category Name.
- Choose a background colour for the category.

- Click Submit.
- The new custom category will be saved to the list.

Edit a custom note category
- Click the Edit icon
for the Custom note category you want to modify.

- Update the categories details as required.
- Click Submit to save your changes.
Delete a custom note category
- Locate the Delete icon
of the Custom note category you want to delete.

- Click the Delete icon.
- You'll be shown a warning message.

- Click Delete to confirm and delete the category.
Warning: Once a custom note category has been deleted this action cannot be undone. Please proceed with caution!
