How to use outcomes

Modified on Wed, 6 Aug at 9:56 AM

Outcomes are labels that can be applied to appointments to reflect their result or next step. These help track the progress of appointments, improve workflow visibility, and provide valuable insights in the Reporting hub.

Outcomes are usually triggered by patient statuses, meaning they can appear automatically when a specific status is applied.

Note on statuses and outcomes: If a status is changed before the start time of an appointment or 48 hours after the end time of an appointment, the outcome will not be applied to the appointment on status change.

Example

An appointment type called Follow-up appointment might have the following statuses and outcomes:

  • Status: Completed → Outcome: Follow-up successful
  • Status: Rebook required → Outcome: Needs further review

Outcomes display as a coloured banner in the appointment’s details, providing a clear visual summary of the result.

Why use outcomes?

  • Track patterns: Identify trends across appointment types and patient outcomes
  • Report clearly: Outcomes feed into reporting, helping measure performance
  • Standardise results: Ensure teams record outcomes consistently across the organisation

Manually adding outcomes

In addition to automatic triggers, outcomes can also be added manually:

  • From the patient dashboard
  • Directly on the appointment in the calendar

This provides flexibility when statuses alone don’t reflect the full context or when adding additional details after the appointment has taken place.

Outcomes are created in the Appointment Types section of Organisation settings, and can be edited or removed as needed.
